In the early hours of May 2, 2024, Russian forces launched a series of drone attacks across several Ukrainian regions, striking key cities such as Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Sumy. These strikes targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas, resulting in multiple injuries and disruptions.

Drone Strikes Disrupt Energy and Civilian Areas

The head of the Mykolaiv regional military administration, Vitaliy Kim, reported that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted the city’s energy infrastructure. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in Mykolaiv following the drone assaults.

In Kharkiv, a Shahed UAV struck the 12th floor of a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. The mayor, Ihor Terekhov, confirmed that a civilian sustained shrapnel wounds to the chest. He noted that the drone did not detonate upon impact, which helped prevent more severe damage and additional casualties.

"Fortunately, the Shahed did not explode — this prevented much more serious consequences," Mayor Terekhov stated.

Sumy experienced repeated explosions, while Kherson faced its third wave of blasts within 24 hours. Ukrainian Air Force sources indicated that these strike drones continue to move toward regions including Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odessa, and the Odessa Oblast.

In the city of Izmail, part of the targeted port infrastructure was protected by efficient air defense systems, with most UAVs being shot down and minor damage reported, according to local administration statements.

Casualties and Damage in Western and Eastern Ukraine

In the western city of Ternopil, over 50 Shahed drones were used in the attacks, with more than 20 detonating and injuring at least 12 people. Sergey Zyubenko, head of the Ternopil regional police, provided these updates highlighting the human impact of the strikes.

Further east, the Nikopol and Kryvyi Rih districts in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast suffered nearly 50 strikes over the course of the day. Four individuals were confirmed injured. Regional administration head Oleksandr Hanzha specified that two women, aged 43 and 50, were hospitalized with moderate injuries, while two others are receiving outpatient care.

These coordinated drone attacks represent an escalation in targeting Ukrainian energy and civilian sectors, underscoring the ongoing risk to critical infrastructure and civilian safety amid continued hostilities.
