Russian Military Strikes Continue Despite Ukraine's Unilateral Ceasefire Proposal
Russia maintains offensive operations against Ukrainian regions despite Kyiv's offer of a unilateral ceasefire starting May 6.
On the night of May 6, Ukraine implemented a unilateral ceasefire proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as an alternative to Russia's announced truce only covering May 8-9, the Victory Day celebrations. Despite this gesture, the Russian Armed Forces escalated military strikes across Ukrainian territories.
According to Ivan Fedorov, head of the local military administration in Zaporizhzhia region, a key industrial facility was targeted by Russian forces overnight. Ukrainian Air Force reports indicated the use of cruise air bombs in that strike. Similar missile launches were recorded in the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk regions during the same period. Additionally, Russian drone activity was detected in Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet publicly responded to the renewed attacks. Earlier, President Zelensky pledged a "mirror" retaliatory response if hostilities continued.
Escalation Amid Ceasefire Attempts and Political Ultimatums
At the start of the week, Russian authorities stated that, by President Vladimir Putin's directive, Russia would unilaterally declare a ceasefire for May 8 and 9 to mark Victory Day. The Russian Ministry of Defense warned that any Ukrainian attempts to disrupt the celebrations would provoke a massive retaliatory missile strike targeting central Kyiv.
In response, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's readiness to cease fire from midnight on May 6, provided Russia reciprocated. He stressed the supreme value of human life over any commemoration, signaling a willingness to reduce civilian casualties. On May 5, Kirill Budanov, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, reaffirmed Kyiv's commitment to maintaining the ceasefire if Russia refrained from further attacks.
The ceasefire concept reportedly originated from a conversation between Putin and former US President Donald Trump, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. Ukraine has been officially notified of Russia's intention to pause hostilities during Victory Day observances.
Nevertheless, Russian forces launched multiple large-scale attacks on May 5, causing over 20 casualties in the cities of Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kramatorsk. Shortly after midnight on May 6, Sergey Aksyonov, the Russia-appointed head of annexed Crimea, reported five civilian deaths following a Ukrainian drone strike on Dzhankoi. Ukrainian officials have not commented on this incident.
"We consider human life incomparably more valuable than the 'celebration' of any anniversary," President Zelensky declared, underscoring Ukraine's stance on the ceasefire amid ongoing hostilities.
